Tribute to James Brown: Carlton J. Smith

Is there anyone better to honour the Godfather of Soul than someone who has walked in his shoes – on screen and on stage? Carlton J. Smith, born and raised in New York, portrayed James Brown in Barry Levinson’s ‘Liberty Heights’, and now brings that same fire and reverence to Velvet Music Salon for an unforgettable tribute.
Introduced to music by his mother, who took him to see The James Brown Revue at the Apollo Theater, and played records by soul legends like Ray Charles, Otis Redding and Marvin Gaye, Carlton’s roots in soul music run deep. Since the late eighties, he has remained a vibrant force in the scene – recording heartfelt music, performing across the globe from Shanghai to Helsinki, and appearing in film, television and theatre. His blend of smooth vocals, emotional truth and magnetic stage presence makes every performance a genuine celebration of soul.
Joined by four outstanding Finnish musicians, Carlton channels the essence of James Brown with authenticity and love – celebrating the music that shaped his life and continues to move generations.
